IN LOVING MEMORY OF ELSWITH RHABURN ESTELLE

Death is nothing else but going home to God, the bond of love will be unbroken for all eternity. Mother Teresa

It’s with deep regret that we the Estell family announce the death of our beautiful mother Elswith Berthamae Rhaburn Estell.

I know everyone tends to say all the best things about their mom but our mom was genuinely a humble, sweet, giving, honest and simply pure of heart, don’t get me wrong she had an edge to her where you messed with one of her own she would snap at you in a flash) but it was just the MOTHER GENE in her.  My heart aches at our loss of our AWESOME mom, but I also want to acknowledge that she was also a sister, aunt, grandmother, neighbor, and really wonderful friend. I learned quite a few things about my mom with our last quality time we spent together over this past holiday that I will hold dearly.......my mom was funny as hell and love to find the laugh in every situation.

She had this look she would give you if she was trying to make fun of something or someone----yes someone----we all do it so don’t pretend you don’t {laugh} but she did it in a very jovial way as a mockery rather than a make fun of.

Funeral service will be held in Ladyville at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 5th, at the Ladyville Baptist Church.

Burial will be in Crooked Tree Village where here late parents, James & Winnefred Rhaburn were laid to rest.

Following the funeral service buses will be leaving for Crooked Tree Village where the burial sermon will be conducted by Pastor Maurice Westby.

Elswith Estell is survived by her husband Dudley Estell, daughters Yvette Halliday{wife of Henry Halliday}; Rowena Estell and Trisha Estell of Chicago, Ill, Sherria (Betty} Estell, Keishalyn Estell & Starlee Estell.

Grand-children: Tyronne Fuentes, Shauntice Martin, Ellsworth Sutherland JR., LeeShawn Gordon, James Halliday & Oren Humes.

OUR BELOVED MOTHER BURMAH VICTORIA FLOWERS

Sunrise:   May 14, 1937

Sunset :   Jan.  25, 2012

This eulogy is dedicated to family, relatives, and very close friends who knew my mother intimately.

Our Mom Burmah Flowers, for those of us who knew her well, was a woman of class, integrity, strength and great faith. She was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gillett on May 14, 1937 in Crooked Tree  Village, Belize.  The third eldest of 10 children, she helped raise her younger brothers and sisters, at the same time that she helped her parents along on their land.

She attended college, pursuing a degree in Education and thereafter becoming a teacher in a school in Belize City; eventually working her way up to an Assistant Principal. Students and fellow teachers alike were very fond of her because of her magnificent personality. She was caring, giving, understanding and loving. My Mom taught in Belize City for a couple of years. She then decided to move to the United States to raise her family as a single parent. This was the beginning of many hardships.   She toiled and worked very hard, taking her first job working as a clothing seamstress in a factory. There were instances where Mom would only have bread and water for lunch in order to save money for us. One day, she came across a nice gentleman who encouraged her to try for a position at the D’ Agostinos supermarket; she applied and got the job in 1976, permanently working there until her retirement. Mom suffered her first stroke on February 21, 2001 which only affected her left peripheral vision. She decided to work for a few more years finally retiring in 2007.  At first, she was bored but later on she began to enjoy her free time.

On January 7, 2010 Mom suffered a second stroke which this time became more severe, paralyzing her entire left side, affecting her vision and losing her ability to swallow. It was at this moment in time that we, her children, realized she would never be the same. Released from the hospital and transferred to a Nursing Home for rehabilitation, she never once gave up as she fought to walk. The physical therapists did all they could, but in-spite of their efforts, Mom was unable to recover. She was eventually released from the Rehabilitation and then went on to live with my brother, where my sisters and I took turns caring for her. Mom then developed a cough that would not go away; she was later diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia.  However, after performing a CATSCAN, the doctors discovered she had two lumps in her right lung.

On January 25, experiencing breathing problems, Mom passed away that very night.  She leaves behind her four children:  Jason Alfred Flowers, Sharlene Victoria Flowers, Rema Elvina Flowers and myself, Nadia Elaine Vales; her siblings Gwenyth Tillet, George Gillett (deceased), Elistine Tillet, Donald Gillett, Jennifer Wilkerson, Edwin Gillett (deceased) and Stephen Gillett, plus numerous cousins, relatives and intimate close friends.

Mom, you were so dear to our hearts. You will be greatly missed. We love you and will cherish you all the days of our lives. Rest in peace, Mom, you will have no more pain and suffering. You have been set free. Love You.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2010 at Community Worship Center-Church of the Nazarene at 117 Madison St, Brooklyn, New York, 11216. The Rev. Dr. Elmer Gillett will be conducting the funeral sermon.

Our Beloved Pastor- Rev. Owen. Frederic Rhaburn Pastor Emeritus Crooked Tree Baptist Church.

Sunrise: April 12, 1928
Sunset: December 23, 2011

Owen Fredric Rhaburn was born in
Crooked Tree Village on April 12, 1928, the third child of John and Edith Flowers Rhaburn. He attended the Crooked Tree BaptistSchool and church. After completing primary school he went to work along with his father in his farming and chicle operations.

Rev. Owen Rhaburn, a beloved husband and pastor served the Crooked Tree Villagecommunity well. He was a leader and centerpiece in the community officiating at many weddings, baby christenings and funerals. He was very committed and he touched many lives in the village. Pastor Rhaburn was a man of character, upstanding in our community and an incredible man of God.

The year 1957 was a very important one in his life. In June he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. And on August 3rd he took Maggie Crawford as his wife and there a month later, on November 3, the Reverend Michael Marrith baptized him and his wife on the profession of faith in Jesus Christ. He was subsequently admitted into the membership of the Crooked Tree Baptist Church.

He served in various capacities of the church including that of deacon. The Reverend Arnold Pearson Superintendent of the Baptist Mission and Pastor of
the Queen Street Baptist Church assumed pastor ship of the Crooked Tree Baptist Church. He retained pastoral responsibility while delegating most of the operational functions of theCrooked Tree Church to the then Deacon Rhaburn. While serving in this capacity, the position of pastor became vacant and he was appointed provisionally as the pastor of the Crooked Tree Baptist Church in 1964.

With the support of Pastor Pearson and the Baptist Church Mission he enrolled in several courses of studies. In 1970 he graduated from Moody Bible Institute with a Diploma in Theology. He subsequently did a post-graduated study and was awarded certification in ‘Sermon Buildings” and “Church Growth”.

In 1968 Pastor Rhaburn left Crooked Tree Village for the Stann Creek Valley Community to serve as pastor of both the Light of the Valley and Stann Creek Town Baptist Churches. He served in that district from 1968 to 1971. In 1971 he returned to Crooked Tree and resumed his position as pastor of the CT Baptist Church. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1998.

It is with great sadness and heaviness of heart that we announce the death of our beloved Pastor Owen Rhaburn. He wrestled long and hard with much pain and illness, and the Lord decided it was time to take him home.

He passed away peacefully on December 23, 2011 at 7:30 p. m. with his loving wife Maggie Crawford Rhaburn at his side. He is now in a place of vast beauty, having passed through the valley of the shadow.

He is survived by his wife Maggie Crawford Rhaburn.

Son: Andrew Rhaburn

Brothers: Cordel Rhaburn, and the the late Alvan Rhaburn, and Clinton Crawford.

Sisters: Mrs. Emma Rhaburn Westby of Crooked Tree Village, Mrs. Isa Rhaburn Matthews of Miami, Florida, and the late Ms. Illa Rhaburn.

He is also survived by 5 grand-children and a host of nieces and nephews.

On Friday, December 30, 2011 the body will be borne by relatives and friends for funeral services at
the Crooked Tree Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with burial at the Crooked Tree Village Cemetery. Pastor Maurice Westby and Brother Joel Westby will be conducting the funeral sermon.

Personal Reflection on Pastor Owen Rhaburn by Tiffany Cadle

Known to be as godfather and goddie Pastor Rhaburn and Miss Maggie Rhaburn have being the spiritual force behind my life. From the moment they set eyes on me Pastor Rhaburn and Maggie Rhaburn vows that they will be my godparents. Many people fail to realize what is the role of godparents, but these two individual have live up to the meaning of that word. They have loved me as a father and a mother love any child. The love I got from these two people was unconditional and the spiritual blessing is overwhelming. They were the ones who made sure that I had the presence of the lord in my life from the time I was able to get myself ready and use the bathroom on my own.

Not having any kids of their own was of no issue to this loving couple. They had loved so many and help so many it was just as if they were the biological parents. Pastor Rhaburn was the father I never had, and where my mother would drop short, Miss Maggie was there to pick up.

I spent every Sunday of my life with my godparents. I can always remember after church we use to all sit and have lunch. I use to love the fact that I got cold water to drink. They were one of the few people in the village that owned a refrigerator powered with kerosene. I use to always get my milk ideal after lunch on a Sunday.

There is no way I can think of my life being this successful without my godparents.  I can remember when I got pregnant at such tender age I felt the worst when I had to go to them and tell them what happen. I thought that I would have scolded me so badly for what I have done. No such thing!! These two people loved me and guided me through that process, and I could not have done it without the love and prays from them.  I am a grown woman now and whenever I feel the world on me I can call them and ask my godparents to pray for me and I can assure you my world of problem is lifted.

I can go on and on about all the lovely things they have done for and I do not see any end any time soon. It boils down these are two exceptional human being in my life and in the life of the people of Crooked Tree.

My godfather lived his life well on this earth and was ready when the Lord called him home. This is one of the most painful day of my life, but I can live knowing that I will have one more angel looking over me.

Rest in peace Pastor Rhaburn.

Tiffany Cadle

In 2008 Crooked Tree Village held it's very first reunion and this lovely billboard was painted by Mr. John King. John was from Dangriga, was married to a Crooked Tree gyal, Olive Swazey and living in Crooked Tree Village with her and their 4 children. About four years ago his wife passed away after a long illness leaving behind John and the children.

Yesterday, December 6, 2011 John passed away at the KHMH and we would like to give our condolences to his family. John was an artist and a hard worker doing whatever odd jobs he could get in Crooked Tree to help support his family. Recently he left the village for the Ladyville area to seek better employment, unfortunately the Lord had other plans for John. His children are still living in Crooked Tree Village and we send our heartfelt condolences to each of them.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, December 8th at the Sanai Church in Ladyville

Rest in Peace John King.

Memorial to Mark “The Fisherman” Hernandez

On October 7, 2011, I informed you of the passing of Mark "The Fisherman" Hernandez in Crooked Tree Village. He died on his birthday, 62 years old at about 8 a.m. and was buried at 4:00 p.m. the same day. He was not afforded a funeral service in any of the 6 churches in Crooked Tree Village; nor was there an announcement over the radio as is customary in Belize.

Mark’s body was laid to rest at the Crooked Tree Cemetery with prayers and blessings by Pastor Mildred Crawford.

About fifteen of his friends turned up to say good-bye to him.

Thank you to Verna Adolphus and family, Joyce Adolphus, Dexter Nicholson, Rema Tillett Seely, Joe Crawford, Mrs. Hessie Codd, Suze Tillett, and her sister.

Thanks also to Kenneth Bruce, Claro Quilter, Albert Tillett, and Tony Sutherland for preparing the grave site.

I think it's an opportunity to remember the good things Mark did for us as a person in our community, and that's what we should focus on. He has lived in our village for more than 25 years providing fish for our tables, and was always a great storyteller.

Then Jesus said these important words: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies”. We must always remember this verse from St. Matthew; “A house, village, community, nation divided against itself will not stand”.

I am so sorry Mark Hernandez. May you rest in peace and rise in glory!

MRS. MAVIS IDOLLY BROWN TILLETT

Ma-Ma Mavis died at 5:00 a.m. Just minutes before she died, the nurse on duty went to check up on her. Ma-Ma Mavis told the nurse that she was feeling stuffy in her stomach and the nurse told her that she was going to get the doctor and would be right back. Before the nurse left she gave her thanks for caring for her and her last words were "I love you nurse".  Ma-Ma was the pillar of the Tillett family and a woman of extraordinary strength and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed all her children to take chances. She was proud of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of them was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

Ms. Mavis, Ma-Ma Mavis, Granny Mavis, Aunt Mae-Mae, Aunt Mavis or Cousin Mavis, as she was called by so many of those who knew her, was born in Crooked Tree Village on September 25th, 1925. She died shortly after celebrating her 86th birthday with many of her children and grand-children.

She is survived by her sister, Ellen Brown Camera, and twelve of her thirteen children – six sons and six daughters.

She outlived her eldest son, Burton, and her husband, Robert ‘Bob’ Tillett, by 33 and 31 years, respectively. Her sons are Winfield, Clarence, Murvin, Leeroy, Barrington and Brian Tillett, and daughters are Olga Fleshman, Noreen Tillett, Annette Crown, Marva Gillett, Lottette Bracket and Bernadette Middleton. Granny Mavis also had 30 grand-children and 22 great-grands. She died as she lived - peaceful, humble, loyal, loving, caring and all that one could have asked for from a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She gave her all, and was truly blessed with a long and loving life, cherished by family and friends, alike. She departed this earth to enter her new home ‘beyond the sunset’, and may she rest in peace.

Her funeral is scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd at 9:00 a. m. at the Crooked TreeBaptist Church in Crooked Tree Village. Rev. Lloyd Stanford of the Belize City QueenStreet Baptist Church will be moving his congregation to Crooked Tree for the funeral.

We at the Crooked Tree Village Reunion are sadden to inform you of the death of Velda Cecilia Hemsley, better known as Ms. Selia.

Ms. Celia was living in Crooked Tree Village for some time with common-law-husband, Hector Wade.

Our deepest sympathy goes to his children, grand-children, brothers and sisters. Ms. Celia was a friend to many in Crooked Tree Village.

May the Almighty comfort all who are mourning her loss.

Velda Cecilia Hemsley also known as “Celia” was born in Belize City on December 23rd, 1939. She was born into a family of three sisters, Leola, Myrna and Dorla, and seven brothers, Earl, Lester, Lennox, Martin, Charles, Rayford and Raymond. Celia attended Ebenezer School and later began to work in various restaurants making delicious foods & pastries. Celia later had a family of her own, David, Steve, Janet, Maureen and Alida.

Celia came to the U.S. around 1985 to be closer to her family. Celia lived a full life and was a support structure and provider for many. Celia had many passions, her fondest was for cooking and baking. If anyone was craving food from home, they just had to ask and she was willing to provide. Whether it was tarts or jam rolls “just call Ms Celia”, and she would make it for them. She also loved to party and have a good time. Where ever the party was she was there! She loved the Casino, state line, Morongo or Pachanga, they were her second home.

Velda was a very loving mother, grand mother, great grand mother, sister and friend to everyone who knew her. While speaking to one of her grand children she said “grandma was the only grandma who you can go out with and party, and she would still get up and make fry jacks for you early in the morning no matter what time she got home.” Her dedication to her family was grand and the love shehad for others could not be matched. That type of person is one in a million.

Although she is no longer in our presence, she remains in our hearts and will live on for all of eternity. We Love You Ms Celia!
